Addressing Mental Health Challenges in College

college student

Mental health issues affect college students. Students face a number of pressures, from meeting new people to time management to debt. A common mental health concern among college students is anxiety.

Anxiety is related to nervousness and excessive worrying. People who experience anxiety have symptoms like nausea, inability to focus, and trouble breathing. While students also experience lows in life, some describe feelings of hopelessness – as if they are in a dark hole. This mental condition describes depression.

Since campuses are already aware of the impact of college on a student’s life, a common activity in colleges is animal therapy. Students can hang out with therapy dogs occasionally. There are also campuses that have full-time emotional support animals.

A Place Where Dogs Socialize and Learn Good Behavior

anderson with dogs

Roxy Anderson has always loved animals, especially dogs. Her mom encouraged her to become a certified dog trainer. Anderson graduated from Animal Behavior College in 2006 and is also a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and Guild for Pet Professionals.

Earlier this month, she opened the Finishing School for Dogs at 1804 Waterloo Road. This school for dogs allows pet parents, especially during winter, to take their furry friends to a place where they can play and learn good behavior through positive reinforcement. During winter, dogs often stay indoors and easily get bored. Anderson understood the importance of enrichment activities for dogs.

One of the activities at Finishing School for Dogs is Doga-Yoga, an exercise that enables dogs to build core body strength and balance. Anderson also offers private lessons at home and canine birthday party rental space.

Q&A: How do you get an emotional support dog letter?

medical professional note

While emotional support animals don’t need certification, commercial airlines and housing providers may require evidence of your need for your animal. In this case, you need to obtain a medical professional’s note. In this Q&A, we will show you how to obtain a support letter.

Here’s the answer:

Have a candid conversation with your doctor or therapist about the medical note. Explain why it is needed and how you will be using it. Take note that not all medical professionals may understand how their note will help you. That is why explaining helps.

(In our online course series, we offer a template that you can use prepared by an attorney, and your doctor can simply sign it. This will save you time since doctors are busy people!)

Hospital Patients Love Getting Visits from a Four-Legged Friend

dog hospital visits

Have you ever wondered why therapy dogs are popular in schools, counseling centers, and hospitals? That’s because interaction with an animal is known to reduce stress and anxiety.

Meet Taz, a therapy dog that visits patients at the University of Missouri Hospital. Bruce Miller, Taz’s handler, says that Taz loves the attention he gets from the patients. Patients can feel isolated at times, and visits from therapy dogs are definitely something they can look forward to.

Peyton Waldren is a 14-year-old boy that loves Taz. According to him, he feels excited about being visited by Taz because it’s been a long time since he has seen a dog.

There is no actual data to prove how dogs impact patients, but psychologist Megan Hosey has already started a study on this which will be completed in about 2 years.

Caring for Your Pet’s Emotional Health

caring for pet

It’s no secret that pets help boost our mood and reduce our stress and anxiety. But are you doing the same for your furry friend? Animals also need to feel loved and secured. When their emotional needs are met, they can feel happiness and function well physically.

Dr. Cynthia Maro shared an experience of hers where a man consulted with her about his 4-year-old Doberman (named Magnum) that suffered from demodectic mites. After months of treatment, Magnum had little improvement. Dr. Maro then learned that there was a lot of stress in Magnum’s home. This probably weakened his immune function.

She shares some of these tips to promote emotional wellness in pets:

  • Offer physical play time to keep pets from getting into trouble.
  • Pets with anxiety should be given a good diet and supplements that help with anxiety.
  • Help your pets fulfill their purpose. For example, if you have a working dog, make sure to give it a lot of physical stimulation.

Cancer Survivor Becomes Dog Trainer and Changes Lives

shelter dog

Sharon Callan found out that she had stage 3 colon cancer and a mere 30% chance of surviving. After discovering her condition, she prayed to God that she would live longer so she could help animals. According to Sharon, he has always been inspired by the bond shared between veterans and dogs.

She co-founded a non-profit organization called Shelter Dogs for Veterans which helps injured veterans recover through service dogs. What Sharon does is that she goes to local shelters and assesses the dogs to identify those that have the potential to become service dogs. She would then train the dogs and match them with veterans.

Sharon believes that her condition helped her become more empathetic to veterans. It also makes her a better dog trainer.

Q&A: Can you and your service animal enter an establishment that doesn’t allow pets?

no pets policy

Some establishments welcome our furry friends, while others frown upon them. But what if you have a service animal and you’re about to enter an establishment with a “no pets allowed” signage? Are you still allowed to enter?

Here’s the answer:

According to the ADA, a service animal must be permitted to accompany an individual with a disability wherever customers are allowed to go. Furthermore, the ADA prohibits discrimination against qualified individuals. As a service animal owner, you should not be segregated from other customers. The ADA requires establishments to modify their “no pets policy” to welcome service animals.

Q&A: Can you take your therapy dog anywhere?

library school

Therapy dog owners can get confused about where they should take their furry friend. Before we answer the question, Can you take your therapy dog anywhere? first, you should know that therapy animals are not covered by the ADA, FHAA, and federal transportation regulations.

So here’s the answer:

Therapy dogs can go to places where pet dogs are allowed and locations that allow therapy dogs. These locations include schools, libraries, hospitals, and other health care facilities. However, note that each location must agree to have the therapy animal visit, but it is not obliged to grant access.

Dog Trainer Expresses Support for ESA Bills

misrepresentation of support animals

Misrepresentation of emotional support animals has become more common these days. Cheryl Wassus, a professional dog trainer for 30 years, told The Monroe News that it’s an unregulated industry and that people think they can take their animals with them anywhere they go.

Last week, she spoke before Michigan’s Senate Local Government Committee in support of the bills introduced by state Sen. Dale Zorn, R-Ida.

These bills include Senate bill 609 which provides a clear distinction between service animals and emotional support animals, and Senate Bill 610 which indicates that people cannot misrepresent themselves to housing providers just to have their pet live with them as an emotional support animal.
