Our Furry Friends Are the Best Medicine

furry friends best medicine

You probably have heard that people with dogs tend to live longer than those who don’t. Findings in the journal Circulation suggest that dogs do contribute to good health. Here are some explanations behind this:

  • Owning a dog increases your physical activity. You need to walk your dog on a daily basis no matter the weather.
  • Dog-owner interaction increases oxytocin levels in both owners and dogs.
  • Dogs reduce your loneliness if you live alone!

More and more hospitals let canines visit patients through their therapy dog programs. In these programs, the canines will be able to offer patients unconditional love as they pet them.

If you’e available on November 10, visit Stone Hollow Brewing Company between 2-4 pm because volunteers at the Beatrice Humane Society will introduce some animals from the shelter!

New Service Animal Act to Support Veterans

new act to support vets

Some veterans in Wyoming, especially vets with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) find it difficult to travel with their service dog. Unfortunately, getting the necessary paperwork required by airlines isn’t that easy since the Veterans Affairs (VA) does not prescribe service animals.

But here’s good news:

Chairwoman Liz Cheney is highly supportive of veterans and had made an amazing announcement. This was what she said:

“I’m proud to introduce the Strengthening Support for Veterans with Service Animals Act to help make it easier for veterans with service-connected disabilities to fly with their service dog…”

With this new streamlined process, a veteran will simply need to present a VA-issued health card with the service-connected” disability designation. In addition, he must be able to provide a training certificate from a service animal organization that has been approved by the Secretary of Transportation.

Q&A: What Should You Do If Someone Violates Your Rights?

violation of rights

Unfortunately, not everyone understands laws about assistance animals. In this Q&A, learn how you can respond to a violation of your rights:

If someone violates your rights out of ignorance of the law, you can solve the issue by briefly educating the person about your service animal. You may also carry handouts that you can give to these people.

However, if a person tries to harass you or threaten your peace of mind, you can give that person a signed Notice of Violation and report him/her to the right government agency.

(To gain access to printable handouts and the Notice of Violation, check out our resources below.)

Q&A: Can a Housing Provider Call Your Medical Practitioner for More Information?

phone call

People with emotional support animals may be wondering if a housing provider should ask detailed questions about their condition and even call their medical practitioner to obtain more information.

Here’s the answer:

While a housing provider may require a medical professional’s letter, asking detailed medical questions about your condition would be an invasion of privacy rights. This also means that the housing provider isn’t allowed to call the medical practitioner.

(Take note that any medical professional can write your ESA letter. For example, a psychiatrist, orthopedic surgeon, or licensed counselor.)

care home gets therapy animal visits

Animal-assisted therapy benefits care home residents in terms of their health and well-being. This year, the Pet Pals Therapy service has become a regular visitor of Barford Court in Hove. Residents get to spend time with well-behaved therapy pets which include cats, chickens, rabbits, and other animals.

Activities coordinator Gemma Wheelhouse says that the therapy animal visits mean the world to the residents. Residents who have advanced dementia were able to experience a real transformation during the visits. The animals calm everyone down and put a smile to their faces.

petkonnect team

Our furry friends mean the world to us, and losing them can be the worst possible experience. Devanshi Shah lost her dog Hazel in 2017 after suffering from a critical health issue for over a month. Hazel didn’t make it after bleeding internally while being prepped for surgery.

Devanshi was inspired to start PetKonnect in 2019 to address the lack of pet care services in India. PetKonnect, based in Mumbai, has a platform that does everything such as helping pet owners connect and accessing emergency services. The platform also provides pet parents with news and articles on pet care and events.

By 2023, PetKonnect hopes to gain over 100,000 users, and 80% of these users should be active.

Market Apologizes After Kicking out Vet with Service Dog

service dog incident

Budhi Blair is a local veteran who brings his service dog Ryder with him wherever he goes. But last Saturday, Blair went to York Central Market House, and there, he had an argument with a vendor about Ryder. As a result, they were forced out of the market. The woman yelled at them about never coming back again.

According to Blair, going out in public without Ryder is impossible because gets tense and nervous. Ryder helps him feel more human. What Blair wants is for people to ask questions about Ryder and why he needs him – rather than make a snap judgement.

York Central Market House has reached out and apologized for the incident. CBS 21 News also reached out to the market to ask about their policies on animals, but they never heard back from the market.

Q&A: Are you required to register your dog as a service animal?

service dog registration

Today’s question and answer is about service dog registration. A lot of people are wondering if they should get their dog registered to explain their animal’s status.

Answer: Service dog registration is not required by law in the United States. Yet, many owners find that registration helps their rights to be respected by businesses, landlords, and people in general. While people cannot demand registration paperwork from you, many will still demand it, even if it’s not legally required.

Meet the New Kid at Troy Elementary School

archie black lab

Did you see the new kid at Bemis and Hill Elementary Schools? You’ve got to meet him. Students love him, a four-legged friend named Archie.

Archie is a 5-month-old black lab who’s currently being trained to socialize through exposure to various people and situations. Media Specialist Heidi Apol trains puppies for Leader Dogs for the Blind in Rochester, and Archie happens to be her newest trainee. Apol says that a school environment is beneficial to Archie and kids who get to be around him.

She takes Archie to classrooms and other special events in the buildings. Fifth grader Natalie Etheridge likes having Archie around. She says that it helps kids practice being around service animals that you cannot pet.
