Q&A: What are the things you should consider before partnering with a service dog?

partner with service dog

Partnering with a service dog needs careful consideration. To help you make the best decision, here are some things to think about:

  • Your ability to sustain the needs of your service dog which requires money
  • The costs of a service dog program. (You can count on assistance as well)
  • The responsibility of caring for your dog every single day
  • The social obligations of accompanying a service dog
  • Your preparedness for the possibility of conflict (because not everyone understands the need for a service dog)

A Ride That Benefited No-Kill Shelter Animals

ride event

On July 7, a special event was held where hundreds of bikers participated in. It was a ride for a cause, the 16th annual Hogs for Dogs benefit ride, held at Denney’s Harley-Davidson. The purpose of the ride was to raise money for no-kill animal shelter Castaway Animals Rescue Effort (CARE).

One of the riders was Rod Petersen and his dog, Stingray. Petersen and Stingray have been together for over 12 years. Petersen calls Stingray his pro bike companion. Stingray isn’t just a regular dog, but she has also been trained to be a service dog. She senses drops in Petersen’s blood sugar and when he gets stressed out.

The Hogs for Dogs benefit ride raised awareness of animal homelessness. Hopefully, the event is able to raise $33,000 as it did in 2018.

A Promising Therapy To Relieve Chronic Pain In Your Pet

gene therapy

Some people cannot handle the idea of dog euthanasia because of chronic pain. Rob Landry, a veterinary pain specialist at the Colorado Center for Animal Pain Management & Rehabilitation, is sick of it too.

That is why he teamed up with a neuroscientist named Linda Watkins. Watkins invented a gene therapy, in the form of a one-time injection, that helps in the production of anti-inflammatory cytokine.

Shane, a dog that suffers from chronic pain, was able to benefit from the therapy. 8 years ago, Shane was in a car accident, and because of that, he could not go to the bathroom for longer than 5 minutes. He received the treatment and the result was amazing.

Canine Companions Connects Assistance Dogs With Veterans

canine companions

According to the Pew Research Center, people who have served in the army may have a hard time transitioning back to civilian life. This is where Canine Companions LTD comes in.

A non-profit organization and founded by Walter James Hart, Jr., Canine Companions have a goal which is to train canines to be able to support trauma victims and anyone with disabilities – this definitely includes veterans who may be struggling with mental health and physical problems. If you want to find them, they operate on the 8th floor of Dream Center Foundation in Silver Lake.

The veterans program director Anthony Worley says that canines can be trained to perform certain actions for veterans such as opening doors. No matter the case, diagnosed or undiagnosed, they can help out.

Spotted: Alpaca at Bunnings Warehouse in Perth

alpaca

Bunnings Warehouse is a DIY and hardware store that is popular for animal sightings – dogs, possums, and more. Bunnings welcomes your four-legged friends as long as they are kept on a leash, are wearing a muzzle, or are carried.

Recently, an alpaca was photographed with its owner. The photo was posted to a Facebook group. However, this isn’t the first time that alpacas have been to Bunnings. Mamoes Country Cottage, a West Australian cottage farm, hosts events at the store, and people get to take pictures of their various animals.

In 2015, there was an incident where a 5-year-old girl was bitten by a Jack Russell Terrier on the leg inside the store. Bunnings paid for the girl’s medical bills. However, their policy permitting dogs inside remained.

How to Keep Your Dog Calm, Safe, and Happy on the 4th of July

4th of july

Did you know that 45% of dogs are afraid of fireworks? With the Fourth of July fast approaching, it’s essential to talk about some steps on keeping your pet calm, safe, and happy. Check out these tips:

  • Feed your dogs earlier during the day since they might lose the appetite to eat when they feel anxious.
  • Make sure to provide a safe and quiet place for your dog to stay – inside your house (and not outside, in your backyard or at the park) is the best place for your pet.
  • You can mask the sound of fireworks by increasing the TV volume.
  • Do your best to keep your dog preoccupied with toys and treats.
  • If your dog starts to panic, offer comfort but don’t be too coddling. Otherwise, your dog will sense that something is really wrong because of a change in your behavior.

College Student Trains Her Own Service Dog

raindrop photo

Madison Love is a student at Knox-Westerlo campus and she is diagnosed with autism and anxiety. Love has a mix-breed pet dog named Raindrop, which she adopted in September 2017 after a hurricane.

Love admits that she never intended to train Raindrop to become her service dog until her sister died. The death of her sister made her anxiety even worse and she also suffered from paranoia.

Love and her family know how expensive it is to train a service dog, so Love did a lot of research on training and started doing it herself. One of the things that Raindrop does to calm Love down is that she nudges Love to sit and lies across her lap.

“It sends a message to my brain and makes it so I can calm down a lot quicker,” Love said.

Q&A: Does the ADA offer protection for emotional support animals in public places?

esa in public

The answer is no. The ADA requires public accommodations to allow service animals (dogs or miniature horses) to accompany their handlers in public. Emotional support animals are not defined under the ADA law in this case.
