Man Has An Emotional Support Alligator To Help Him Deal With Depression

alligator esa

Joie Henney from Pennsylvania suffers from depression following the death of his three close friends. While people with mental health problems turn to medication and self-help, Joie claims to use an emotional support alligator. The five-foot-long alligator is named Wally and was approved by Joie’s doctors. Wally was rescued from Orlando when he was still 14 months old. Now, he’s 4 years old.

Despite being an emotional support animal, Joie knows that Wally can inflict harm at any moment because he’s a wild animal. For now, Joie describes the animal like a big teddy bear who likes to snuggle and give him hugs.

More College Students Bring Emotional Support Animals To Campus

college esas

In the past, students who lived in college dormitories used to leave their pets at home. Now, we can see that more and more students request to have their cat or dog accompany them to campus, and these animals are labeled “emotional support animals.” ESAs are known to provide therapeutic benefits to their owners suffering from an emotional disability such as anxiety or depression.

Administrators at Temple University say that the number of requests for emotional support animals increased from 6 requests to 20 requests in one year. While there is the likelihood of fraud behind these requests, still, college administrators have a hard time denying these requests because they’re for mental health.

Dog Takes Its Job As An Emotional Support Animal Seriously

alaskan malamute

A large Alaskan Malamute was photographed on a China Southern Airlines flight. The dog is an emotional support animal and was allowed to accompany its owner. It was given its own seat free of charge.

As you can see from the snapshot above, the emotional support dog showed his best behavior on the flight. It sat quietly, and this garnered praise from social media users who made the dog’s photo go viral. A person even commented, “Compared with annoying kids who keeps kicking other people’s seats or old people who talk loudly, I’d rather sit with a service dog!”

It’s not uncommon to hear stories about emotional support animals getting denied. For example, the emotional support peacock at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. Another is about a 21-year old student who flushed her dwarf hamster because the airline didn’t allow the animal.

Answer: Here’s an example of an answer you can give: “Not all disabilities are obvious to others. I am a veteran suffering from PTSD and my Service Animal is trained to provide a physical buffer between me and other people in crowded situations which trigger my symptoms. Under the ADA, I’m allowed to take him with me anywhere I go, so please let me be on my way and I thank you for your cooperation.”

Do Assistance Animal Owners Need to Buy Gear?

service animal gear

Question: Do assistance animal owners need to buy gear?

Answer: The answer is no. Gear for assistance animals is not legally required, and probably never will be, in order to allow disabled people to move freely in public without stigma or feel labeled. However, even though not required, gear is sometimes desired by an owner in situations where it will short-cut conversations or help prevent misunderstandings in public spaces.

Low-Income People Need Animal Care Services, Too

animal care

Polly Lambert, 21, understands the beauty of having an animal in her life. Since she was 14, she never had a permanent home. However, she says that the only thing that has been with her ever since was her Australian Shepherd dog named Ginger. Ginger used to be a show dog but ended up in a shelter after being abused. Ginger has helped Polly by saving her from several suicide attempts.

Veterinarian Dr. Denise Pilgeram of the low-cost clinic at Union Gospel Mission, says that low-income individuals need pets. Pets help them keep going despite their life challenges. Because of that, Dr. Denise’s first priority is to serve the homeless. Her clinic offers basic medical care and testing, and offers pet supplies to those who cannot afford them. The clinic is open three Wednesday’s each month.

Ways Emotional Support Animals Make You Feel Better

animals provide comfort

Emotional support animals are the kind of assistance animals that help people cope with mental health problems like PTSD, depression, and anxiety. Just petting an emotional support animal will trigger the release of your body’s feel-good hormones.

If you want to know how these animals make you feel better, here are the ways:

  • ESAs help ease feelings of isolation. They’ll always remain by your site no matter what — on good days and bad days. The best thing about these animals is that they’re there for you without judgment.
  • You follow a daily routine. As an emotional support animal owner, you need to take your dog outside for exercise. You meet its needs. That, in turn, benefits you.
  • ESAs provide stress relief. Whenever you take your emotional support dog out for a walk, you also get exercise. Exercise reduces your stress and improves your mood.
