honoring k9s

It’s an important day for Pleasant Valley School District because they’ll be honoring nine dogs for the help they provided during the loss of a high school junior named Peter Kramer. The dogs offered comfort at that time of mourning.

The dogs’ handlers received a certificate of appreciation as well as a trophy with tasty treats. One dog owner named Kise was impressed at how the dog volunteers were able to perform their work. He appreciated the dogs’ patience and calmness.

University Allows Pets — Not Just Assistance Animals!

university allows pets

Edinboro University of Pennsylvania is one of the very few universities that respond to students’ needs when it comes to pets. Just recently, their associate vice president for student affairs Stacie Wolbert says that they will be allowing pets to occupy the two floors of Lawrence Towers A.

She says that up to 50 students are allowed to bring their pets to school. Dogs that are allowed should weigh no more than 40 pounds. It should be at least 6 months old and be on a leash. Most importantly, the students will have to be responsible for their pets and that includes when the pet attacks other people or animals, or cause damage to the facility.

Edinboro University will not charge fees for students to have the pet on campus.

What to Do When Disaster Strikes (Tips for Pet and Service Dog Owners)

emergency

As a pet owner or service dog owner, it’s important to prepare for emergency situations to keep your furry friend safe. Here are some helpful tips from The Humane Society of the United States:

1. Prepare a list of pet-friendly hotels because, in emergency situations, shelters fill up pretty fast.

2. Remember that if a situation is not safe for you, it’s also unsafe for your pet/service dog.

3. If you own a service animal, know that under the ADA, your animal is required to stay by your side at all times and that includes when you are in a disaster shelter.

4. Pack an emergency kit that includes bottled water, canned dry food, two weeks’ supply of pet medication, medical and vaccination records, and more.

5. If a situation arises where you really need to abandon your pet, make sure that it has a microchip or collar with your current information.

Owner at a Service Dog Training Center Speaks up about Service Animals

assistance animal puppies

Tim Franks is the Owner of On Command Canine Training Academy, a service dog training center for special needs. Because of the craze around emotional support dogs, Tim speaks up about the issue on training.

He says that people can’t put a vest on an animal and already claim it to be a service animal. Because for one, the service dogs at his facility undergo 180 hours of training. And to be clear, service dogs are trained to perform specific tasks for their handlers.

Tim adds that it’s not about the certification but rather the amount of training a dog gets. Because if a dog misbehaves in public, that could be a cause for concern.

Question: What makes a good therapy dog?

The Good Samaritan Medical Center has a new program which their doctors believe to be great for helping patients recover. Their program involves therapy dogs which will be making rounds at the building to brighten up the day for patients.

Howard Kirkpatrick, the owner of one golden retriever, said, “It really gives them a lot of comfort to see him and any of the dogs and pet them, especially when you’re not feeling well the pet therapy seems to just really brightened her day.”

Research reveals that pet therapy lowers people’s pain, anxiety, and depression.

The owners of the dogs visiting Good Samaritan Medical Center say that their dogs have been tested and trained for certification. This means that they were evaluated on how well they handled noises and maintained the ability to stay calm around food.

Two Friends Work Together To Help Veterans

working with therapy dogs

Two women who were animal lovers since they were little found themselves working hand in hand to help many veterans. These women are Dr. Rhonda Phillips Black and Lori Stevens. Black is the founder of the Country Friends Veterinary Clinic which used to be her home. Stevens, on the other hand, founded Patriot Paws. Let’s hear their stories:

Dr. Rhonda Phillips Black

Black grew up with farm animals and mentioned that she always wanted to become a vet for horses. She began practicing privately after 3 years out of school. She ran her clinic Country Friends Veterinary Clinic for 30 years. Now, she wants to work with Patriot Paws and helps with the medical needs of the non-profit.

Lori Stevens

Lori Stevens was the type of kid who brought strays at home. She started her career with dogs by working as a mobility service dog trainer. Her dad was a veteran and passed away. Her service dog organization Patriot Paws ensures that a service dog will really make a difference in a veteran’s life. Stevens once said, “There is nothing like when you get that phone call or a text from a veteran who says their dog totally changed their life.”
