What Are 2 Considerations for Owning an Exotic Emotional Support Animal?

exotic support animals

Question: What are 2 considerations for owning an exotic emotional support animal?

Answer: An owner using an exotic species or breed for an Emotional Support Animal would likely need to address these issues:

  • Whether the chosen species or breed presents a health hazard to others (i.e., a poisonous spider or full-blood wolf).
  • Whether there is a reasonable need to have that particular type of animal that a more traditional animal such as a dog, cat, or rabbit would not equally fulfill.

Dog Born Without Front Legs Comforts Hospital Patients

hairy chihuahua

Meet Nubby, a 7-year-old long-haired Chihuahua born without back legs. Deidre Grafel is Nubby’s mom. She found him in a parking lot in California. Together, they live a fulfilled life.

Nubby is very special. He provides therapy to patients at Cardon Children’s Medical Center. At the hospital, he offers snuggles and kisses. He also enjoys getting belly rubs.

According to Deidre, Nubby’s presence doesn’t only offer comfort, but it also helps raise awareness for people with special needs like him. Deidre says, “Once we become immune to seeing and hearing and learning about special needs beings being people and pets, then we will be more accepting of them.”

Nubby is one of the therapy dogs at Banner Health. If you wish to volunteer, visit this page for more information.

Animal Rescue Service Welcomes a Miracle Dog

dog to be fitted with prosthetics

Ranch Hands Rescue is an animal rescue service based in Texas. It rescues animals so these animals can help people who are victims of trauma.

Just recently, Ranch Hands Rescue adopted a puppy from a local shelter. This puppy was special because she has three legs that don’t work. She’s a 10-month old Basenji mix named Roo.

Bob Williams, Ranch Hands Rescue’s founder, said that Roo would have likely been euthanized. Now, his goal is to help Roo heal, get her prosthetic legs, and undergo 2 months of physical therapy. Currently, the ranch accepts donations for Roo’s prosthetics.

While some people question whether the intervention is worth it, Williams remains optimistic. He believes that animals that are given a chance gain back their dignity.

Veteran Reunited with Service Dog in Training After It Was Stolen from Car

veteran and service dog in training

For years, veteran Brandon Nealeigh searched for a service dog that would help him cope with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Finally, he was able to get a 4-month old puppy named Milly. Milly helps Brandon cope with anxiety and makes him feel comfortable in crowds.

Unfortunately, Milly was stolen from Brandon’s car on a Thursday night while he took his family out for dinner and a movie. Brandon said that he made sure to feed Milly, tuck her in, and lock the car door. But when they came out after the movie, they discovered that someone tampered with the locks and Milly was nowhere to be found.

Brandon and his family began their search for Milly. They offered $1,000 as a reward. Fortunately, Milly had been found late Friday night.

How Does a Service Animal Help a Person with Epilepsy?

seizure alert dog

Service dogs that assist their handlers diagnosed with epilepsy are able to recognize subtle changes in behavior or scent prior to an episode. Seizure alert dogs warn their handlers about an impending seizure attack by whining, barking anxiously, or pressing a button that calls 911. Indeed, seizure alert dogs give humans a second chance at life.

What Kind of Dog Can Be a Service Dog?

breeds for service dogs

If you are thinking about getting a service dog, you may be wondering whether there should be specific service dog breeds. “What are good service dog breeds?” “Are there specific service dog breeds for PTSD?” While there are, of course, common breeds used as service dogs such as Labradors and Golden Retrievers, the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) says that any dog can qualify. There is also no size requirement and maximum weight limit.

A Service Dog That Approaches You Without Its Handler Could Be Asking for Help

service dog and woman

If a service dog without its handler approached you, is it possible that its handler is somewhere and in need of assistance? The answer is yes. Another possibility is that the dog is lost or got away. Whichever situation is true, the best thing you should do is to try to help.

Patricia Hairston of Canines for Service, an organization that trains assistance dogs, says that you should talk to the dog and ask where its owner is. This might sound like a weird advice but remember that service dogs are trained to respond to certain cues. Also, find out who the dog belongs to and contact a medic.

Going on a Date? Here Are 5 Pet-Friendly Date Ideas to Try

pet friendly ideas

When you’re going on a date and will be away for hours, it makes you feel guilty to leave your fur baby at home alone. Why not bring your pet along? That way, you get to enjoy your date and also grab the opportunity to introduce him or her to your best bud. Here are five dog-friendly date ideas.

1. Take a hike together – Walking in nature is a win-win for everyone. It’s a great way to release your dog’s energy and will also lower your stress. Remember to keep your dog on a leash. Bring food and water.

2. Go to the pet supply store – If you’re planning to take your dog to the pet shop anyway, why not invite someone special to join you? You can have an engaging conversation about caring for pets especially if your date also happens to be a pet owner.

3. Dine at a dog-friendly restaurant – Look up “dog friendly restaurants near me” in Google and make a date out of it. Make sure to check that the restaurant will allow you to take your dog indoors.

4. Go out for a jog – If both of you are into fitness, a jogging date would be exciting. This is a good way to loosen up. Also, you won’t have to feel conscious about getting a post-run meal at a pet-friendly restaurant.

5. Outdoor movie night – A lot of parks host movie nights. Some parks will also offer refreshments and great music. Catch a flick with your date and ask him/her to bring his/her fur baby as well.

Students at Gunn High Spend the Afternoon with Animals

chicken

ROCK (Reach Out. Care. Know.), a student club at Gunn High School in Palo Alto, held an event where the high school students would be able to interact with animals from Animal Assisted Happiness. The animals included goats, chickens, bunnies, and guinea pigs.

The purpose of the event was to help take the stress off the minds of students who are about to take the final exams. Not to mention, these students will also be learning whether they’ll be selected by their dream colleges or not.

One freshman says that she feels relaxed petting a chicken instead of worrying about homework over the weekend. ROCK’s goals include building connections and promoting community building. This is the second time that the student club partnered with Animal Assisted Happiness.
