Helen Nicholas was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease since 2012. She is just one of the many patients in the US who suffer from the same disease. Now, she spends most of her days with man-made robot animals. They’re a new form of social therapy.

Mary Barnes, CEO of Alzheimer’s Community Care, says these robotic animals help patients interact with their peers. According to the caregivers, the toys are being seen as real animals by their patients and that they bring joy and relaxation.

Low-Income People Need Animal Care Services, Too

Polly Lambert, 21, understands the beauty of having an animal in her life. Since she was 14, she never had a permanent home. However, she says that the only thing that has been with her ever since was her Australian Shepherd dog named Ginger. Ginger used to be a show dog but ended up in a shelter after being abused. Ginger has helped Polly by saving her from several suicide attempts.

Veterinarian Dr. Denise Pilgeram of the low-cost clinic at Union Gospel Mission, says that low-income individuals need pets. Pets help them keep going despite their life challenges. Because of that, Dr. Denise’s first priority is to serve the homeless. Her clinic offers basic medical care and testing, and offers pet supplies to those who cannot afford them. The clinic is open three Wednesday’s each month.

Retired Marine Helps Service Members By Raising Support Dogs

Omar Taylor is a retired marine who now raises Bullmastiff puppies so he can give them to active service members, police officers, and veterans. These puppies will serve as emotional support companions. Taylor calls the puppies “11 shades of gray” and will be giving them to their new owners on February 25.

Taylor understands how hard it can be to return to civilian life. He admits that sometimes it’s difficult to get out of bed in the morning. Emotional support dogs can be beneficial in such situations. Take note that Taylor doesn’t make a profit by sharing the puppies. He only asks the new owners if they’re able and willing to cover medical costs.

Kids Learn About Therapy Dogs at the Children’s Museum

At the Children’s Museum, kids were able to meet and greet therapy dogs of different breeds and sizes. The Mankato Chapter of Therapy Dogs International brought 27 of their dogs so that the kids could learn more about them.

The kids were also taught the best way to approach therapy dogs — for example, ask the handler first if it’s alright to pet the dog. The experience was effective in helping the kids become more comfortable with dogs.

It’s important that therapy dogs are able to work with strangers, behave well around others, and deal with distractions and loud noises. Therapy dogs can be any breed — there are no restrictions.

Officer Trains Pigs as Therapy Animals

Meet Sarge and Frankie, two adorable pigs who are being trained to become therapy animals. They both live in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer Webster House. Webster mentors kids in school for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD). His goal is to get Sarge and Frankie involved in community outreach.

According to Webster’s wife, she didn’t welcome the idea of having the pigs in their home. Eventually, Webster was able to convince her. The entire family has been delighted so far with the pigs’ intelligence and sensitivity to their feelings.

Webster calls him, his family, and the two pigs the “Bacon Response team.”
