A New Command Type For Service Dogs to Uphold Social Distancing Guidelines

pexels-pixabay-357142

“Take-it to” is the new command Kyla Lavender teaches the dogs at Aggie Guide Dogs and Service Dogs (AGS). The command’s purpose is to reduce the need for person-to-person contact by letting a service dog transport an object from one person to another. The initiative was made out of the goal to keep services available while reducing the chance of putting others at risk of viral transmission.

AGS has been on the A&M main campus in College Station since 1997. It is a student-run organization. Lavender, one of the AGS Dog Trainers said, “COVID-19 has really been hard on everyone, specifically some of our trainers and people with service dogs, due to the fact that they have had to adapt to a new lifestyle.”

The Mormon Church Clarifies Service Animal Policy for Temples and Meetinghouses

Churches or any other places of worship in the United States are under no legal obligation to allow assistance animals inside. They can deny admittance of service and emotional support animals even when a person possesses proof of mental or physical disabilities.

However, for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a clarified policy was posted to inform local leaders and the general public. The notice stated, “Bishops and stake presidents may determine whether to allow individuals with disabilities to use trained service dogs in meetinghouses.”

Service and emotional support animals remain unwelcome to temples. Individuals with special needs are encouraged to ask help from temple workers or go to church with their family members so they may be assisted.

Teaching Children How to Be Philanthropic Towards Animals

pexels-alexandro-david-1808530

Teaching a kid how to be charitable at a young age lays a foundation of philanthropy that will last an entire lifetime. Although it may be hard to teach them the idea that to give is better than to receive, it is never too soon to let a child develop feelings of altruism.

One way to teach kids philanthropy is to let them get involved with animals. This would work so well because children and animals are a perfect pair. Bring them to animal shelters while carrying pet food or supplies. Take them with you to local humane society gatherings. And lastly, teach them the importance of assistance animals and how to interact with them.

9/11 Memory Inspires Fundraising Challenge

1,980 – that was how many steps it took for firefighters to reach the top of the World Trade Center during the 9/11 attack. To honor the deaths of those lost their lives and the sacrifices of the first responders, Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center (NFMMC) has set up the 1,980-step fundraiser.

The aim of this fundraiser is to help non-profits such as animals at the Niagara County SPCA, engaging veterans, and volunteer fire halls who have been hit hard by the pandemic. “We thought of service dogs that were there on 9/11. That led to the animals at the SPCA, so we contacted them and they loved the idea and said they’d spread the word over their social media platforms,” said Mike Bevill of NFMMC. To learn more about the fundraiser, visit this site.

The lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic is soon to be lifted after a few weeks. Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has announced in a press conference that the state of Victoria will soon be easing restrictions on activities.

Included in the easing are businesses like pet grooming and beauty services. In order to adapt to the new normal, pet groomers will now be permitted in providing contactless service to their customers.

All the customer has to do is to drop their pet off at the grooming service venue and come back when the grooming is done. However, this will only be available for fixed sites, said Mr. Andrews.

Special Benefactor Makes It Possible for Animal Shelter to Train Their Rescue Dogs

pexels-tom-verdoot-2899100

An operation expansion has happened in El-Liza’s Dog House at Mossy Creek Kennel. This is because a benefactor has allowed them to purchase a boarding kennel for profit at Cherry Valley – the same town in Otsego County, New York where El-Liza’s is located.

The profits from this purchase will go towards the Rescue Dogs Rescue Soldiers Program, a program founded by Mrs. Elizabeth Keller, who happens to be the Co-founder of El-Liza’s Dog House.

Rescue Dogs Rescue Soldiers’ purpose is to take in dogs, train them, and pair them with local war veterans who need service dogs or emotional support animals to help them cope with PTSD and other mental health conditions.

Kent State’s Quarantine Dorms and How the Residents Survive Inside

dog-1006435_1920

School campuses are using their dorms to house and quarantine students coming from outside of Ohio or have been exposed to COVID-infected people. The quarantine rooms are in every residence hall of the campus.

Jill Jenkins, Executive Director of Residence Services, said, “The concentration of them is in buildings that have private bathrooms and that’s our ideal situation, so primarily we have been using the Centennial Courts early in the year.”

The students who are under quarantine were allowed to keep animals in the quarters. These animals can either be for assistance, service, or emotional support. Residents are also given the liberty of walking their animals outside twice a day.

Washington State County Fairground Helps in Sheltering Evacuated Animals From Wildfires

squirrel-4452016_1920

The Big Hollow Fire in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest seems to have stalled as winds start to blow eastward away from westward communities. “It hasn’t moved eastward out of where it’s already burned. We’re lucky it hasn’t expanded, but that may change,” said Dana Levitt, a Public Information Officer.

The fire, however, has continued to rage in other Washington and Oregon areas affecting air quality for people and animals. Cowlitz County Fairgrounds opened last Friday to shelter the affected animals from Washington and Oregon state. The fairgrounds has 26 horse stalls in its indoor area with many other small animal pens. Livestock like cow, sheep, goat, and pig are welcome and can be accommodated there.

Iowa Nonprofit Aims to Build Care Farm For Households With Special Needs

kids-at-the-farm

Brad and Gina Perkins have one goal; Raise more than $35,000 to build an inclusive care farm that teaches life and job skills to individuals with special needs in Ames and the entire state of Iowa. The idea came when their 5-year-old daughter, Kaitlyn, was diagnosed with Autism back in August 2018.

“We want the kids to learn the life lessons our kids learned growing up by taking care of animals — the basic skills of working hard, doing a task, and then when done with that task, coming back for another one,” said Brad. If you’re interested to make a donation, you can visit the Cultivating Hope Farms Website.

Amidst Pandemic, Pet Adoption Rates Are Still High, If Not, Increasing

dog-4153418_1920

The pandemic situation we all face right now isn’t all bad news. For Los Angeles, Oakland, and San Jose, a study by Digital Third Coast (DTC) showed that these areas have the biggest pet adoption number in the whole United States.

“Many Americans have relied on their animals for emotional support during this difficult time, 94% said that they have done so and following that 42% have considered getting another pet for that purpose,” said Kylie Moore, a Content Strategist at DTC.

Among the top 3 cities, Miami, Fresno, and Denver follow as areas that are popular with pet adoption as well. In Idaho, a 67% increase in pet adoption interest has also been noticed.
