On a bright Saturday at the ASC Centre and College, Lieutenant General Basant Kumar Repswal puts a wreath at the Animal War Memorial. The homage was paid along with the celebration of Animal Transport (AT) Remembrance Day.

The memorial signifies the role fulfilled by the horses and mules of the Indian Army in helping the Allied forces win against the Central Powers led by Germany in World War I. September 26 was chosen at AT Remembrance Day because it was on the 26th of September in 1914 that the Mule Corps landed at Marseilles.

The Mule Corps, as part of the Indian Expeditionary Force, carried supplies to support the French, British, and Allied armies.

Veterinary experts will be sent by the government of Texas to California. They have two missions: One to provide caring aid for all the animals in the area affected by the ongoing wildfires. Two, help in alleviating the stress faced by the local responders. This was announced last Friday, September 25, 2020, by the Governor of Texas Greg Abbott.

“Texas is always ready to answer the call to help our fellow Americans in their time of need,” said Abbott. Six agents from the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and nine members of the Texas A&M Veterinary Emergency Team (VET) have already been deployed to Butte County, California last Saturday.

September is National Animal Pain Awareness Month. As Dr. Cynthia Maro experiences, a lot of pet owners she encounters ask, “How can I tell if my pet is in pain?” To answer that question, here are a few signs of animals experiencing pain:

• Being less social from you and visitors like hiding.
• Decreased activity by sleeping a lot.
• Hesitation to go up and down stairs or jumping onto surfaces.
• Change in normal posture or gait – showing lameness.
• Changes in bathroom habits like pottying in no-go areas.
• Change in behavior – starts to be aggressive for no reason.
• Refusal to go for walks – pulls the leash back.
• Over-grooming areas on the body to the point of injury.
• Skipping or refusing meals – doesn’t come when called for meals.

The Guide Dogs for America’s puppy-raiser program places the organization’s litters in the foster care of puppy raisers. If you’re interested in joining the program, you’ll earn the experience of preparing the puppies for formal training and life as working guide dogs. There is no experience needed, except for a few things:

• Must live in Southern California.
• Puppy-raisers pay for food, toys, and flea/tick medication
• Out-of-pocket expenses are tax-deductible
• Must have time to invest in the dog’s training
• Assignments last about 14 months
• Puppies are matched with raisers at 8 weeks old
• Puppies return to the GDA campus for formal training at 16 to 18 months
• ‘After formal training, dogs are matched with a client
• If the dog does not successfully complete the program, it will be evaluated for placement in GDA’s service dogs program
• If the dog is not suitable for service work, puppy raisers have the option to adopt

Purina’s Dog Chow initiated its 3rd Annual Service Dog Salute Campaign last September 18, 2020. Perfect to celebrate National Service Dog Month. The goal of the campaign is to raise $100,000 and create a future where “every military hero in need can find a canine hero of their own.”

To help the company in reaching its goal, Dog Chow has released its products with special markings. “Take-it to” is the new command Kyla Lavender teaches the dogs at Aggie Guide Dogs and Service Dogs (AGS). The command’s purpose is to reduce the need for person-to-person contact by letting a service dog transport an object from one person to another. The initiative was made out of the goal to keep services available while reducing the chance of putting others at risk of viral transmission.

AGS has been on the A&M main campus in College Station since 1997. It is a student-run organization. Lavender, one of the AGS Dog Trainers said, “COVID-19 has really been hard on everyone, specifically some of our trainers and people with service dogs, due to the fact that they have had to adapt to a new lifestyle.”

Churches or any other places of worship in the United States are under no legal obligation to allow assistance animals inside. They can deny admittance of service and emotional support animals even when a person possesses proof of mental or physical disabilities.

However, for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a clarified policy was posted to inform local leaders and the general public. The notice stated, “Bishops and stake presidents may determine whether to allow individuals with disabilities to use trained service dogs in meetinghouses.”

Service and emotional support animals remain unwelcome to temples. Individuals with special needs are encouraged to ask help from temple workers or go to church with their family members so they may be assisted.
